The German-Omani Society was founded on 4 September 1992 in Bonn on an invitation of Ambassador Shaikh Saud bin Suleyman al-Nabhani in the Omani Embassy (then in Bonn). The founding members include more than 30 personalities from academia, politics, diplomacy and economy.
We trace our founding impetus and founding initiatives back to Sayyid Tarik bin Taimur Al Sa'id, the first Prime Minister of Oman. He had a close personal relationship with Germany throughout his life. He had lived in Germany for a long time in the 1930s and again in the 1960s. During these formative periods of his life, he familiarised himself intensively with German culture and politics, studied the German transformation processes and established many personal contacts and friendships. Thus, the foundation of a German-Omani friendship society and the linking of the civil societies of the two countries had always been a matter close to his heart. Shaikh Saud explicitly referred to these initiatives and ideas of Sayyid Tarik with his founding invitation.
We celebrated our anniversary with three major events:
- an inter-religious concert, Voices of Faith in two places: in the pilgrimage church Maria Birnbaum in Sielenbach and in the Philippuskirche in Leipzig (entry 8.6.22) - You can listen to the concert at Maria Birnbaum with the following LINK: https://youtu.be/CiFaE3QFKL8.
- a delegation tour with members to the Sultanate of Oman organized and led by our board member Professor Sibylle Brunner (entry 30.11)
- a special edition of our newsletter on the history and projects of the German-Omani Society since 1992.
